I'm an
Individual
Jerry's experience and passion are in Product Engineering, Development, and Design and the technical management thereof. He has worked domestically and internationally developing products and supporting: third-party certifications, production start-ups, production troubleshooting, and Sales and Marketing efforts. Jerry has worked in small and large companies as well as consulted. He has extensive experience with the entire product cycle from conceptualization to mass production support. This includes: collaborating on product concepts and feasibility; writing functional and interface specifications, writing performance and verification reports; analog and digital electronics design incorporating manufacturability, testability, electromagnetic compatibility, and electrostatic discharge aspects; supporting PCB designers, firmware, software, and diagnostic teams, manufacturing, mechanical, and quality engineers and buyers. He has provided engineering oversight of third-party design resources; functional testing and design verification; reviewed and tested hardware diagnostics. He has worked directly with component manufactures, and both domestic and off-shore contract manufacturers. He travelled overseas to support pre-production/production; and mass production. He resolved: component availability, end-of-life, and quality issues and analyzed production and field failures. He has worked successfully in environments as the sole hardware engineer and as member of a distributed design team. He is an excellent verbal and written communicator. Some products for which Jerry directed the development or designed the electronics are: a peripheral for mainframe computer bus; a demonstration railroad ticket vending machine; two coin operated ticket vending machines; off-air and cable television channel selection monitors; three online ticketing terminals, including an impact printer, a thermal printer, a marked card reader, and a document scanner; two ticket validation terminals; self polling modem for multi-dropped networks; a DSU/CSU communication network interface; two DSP based leased line modems; several USB and IEEE1394 high performance audio interfaces; and three combined audio and control surface interfaces for digital audio work stations. He has consulted for: Renewable Energy Revolution, SunQuest Energy, Native Instruments North America, IO Lab Corp, and Entertainment Manufacturing Group, Inc. Where he: developed a method for collecting power from a multiplicity of exercise bicycles for an inverter which supplies power to a building's electrical system; reviewed schematics, reduced power consumption of battery-operated power control circuitry, and made recommendations that resolved electromagnetic emissions of a portable Disc Jockey controller used with an iPad; took over and completed development and verification of a 4-channel, 24-bit, 96,000 samples/second, audio interface for a high-end Disc Jockey mixer; designed and verified prototypes of a flexible modular four-channel re-clocker for restoring AES3 digital audio signals sent over long 75Ω & 110Ω cables; conceived and built evaluation unit to quietly switch input sources to active live sound power amplifiers; and created and verified the design for a digital audio signal re-clocker, with automatic bypass on failure, that is configurable into three functionally different products. He is a co-inventor on methods: for synchronously processing fader position inputs in an audio system and for detecting the channel to which an electronic receiver system is tuned. He has been employed by Control Data Corporation, Control Data Australia Pty. Ltd., Ceridian Corporation, Automated Wagering International, Video Lottery Technology, Electronic Data Systems, Powerhouse Technology, M-Audio, and Avid Technology.

I've been in the electronics business for more than 40 years & have not met an engineer as knowledgeable, dependable & creative as Jerry Thatcher. Back when other component & design engineers didn't have time for me, Mr Thatcher did - because he always has an eye towards improving his BOM. He was willing to learn about new developments. We've hired Jerry to engage in several designs for us - the last a highly complex channel duplicator & jitter reduction system for the pro audio/live performance markets. His schematics were verified on first pass. Nothing wasted, a perfect design. Time to revenue maximized. Such success mitigates development cost & improves any program's income statement. This makes hiring Jerry Thatcher well worth it.

Jerry worked in my group at M-Audio and Avid Technology as a part of a small team devoted to high-priority products, primarily designing/developing pro audio circuit boards. Besides handling his own projects, he was the go-to man for power supply design/debug on many other's projects. Not only is he a capable independent contributor, but his calm disciplined nature and broad knowledge makes him an excellent team player as well. Jerry is a very reliable, hard-working engineer who goes the extra distance to get things done. I remember many times he worked late into the night (or early morning) to drive tasks to completion. I highly recommend Jerry!

Jerry and I have worked on several complex projects from power to digital audio. He has a wealth of understanding of how products need to perform in the field yet how to capture the best design to aid in manufacturing as well as costing concerns. I would recommend Jerry to anyone looking for a knowledgeable easy to work with engineer on nearly any type of project from the concept to completion.

During my time as Head of Hardware Engineering at Native Instruments we contracted Jerry to help design an analog audio PCB as part of a larger system in development at that time. I knew Jerry would be the right person for the task from my time working with him at M-Audio / Avid Technology. Jerry took responsibility for schematic entry, layout review, functional verification of prototypes and audio performance measurements, as well as integration of the analog board into the system. Jerry integrated very well with our development team on the West Coast, and was more than willing to go the extra mile on this schedule-wise very tight project. We shipped on-time and on-budget, something we could not have done without Jerry's significant help.
